Practical

We're given a task to choose our favourite graphic design from Pinterest.

Design 1:
Genes to cells journal cover, volume 16 (By TRAIS Co.,Ltd)
Figure 1.1 Genes to cells journal cover, volume 18 (By TRAIS Co.,Ltd)

Description:
I was impressed by the well blend of scientific content with artistic imagination of the cover design , which creatively combined the aesthetics of traditional Japanese art with the concept of cell division in biology. Replacing chromatids with cats added a playful and visually engaging twist, making the design even more intriguing and expressive.

The cover expressed:
This is a cover for a journal called “Genes to Cells”, from The Molecular Society of Japan.
The cover of the past journals are published with traditional Japanese art as well to highlight the journal’s cultural origins.
The use of cats not only provides an eye catchy visual effect, but also make the concept of cell division easier to be understood, using different pairs of cats

Design 2:
Figure 1.2: REJOICE Art and Women poster (By Everyday Practice)
Description:
The pixel art caught my eye at first glance. I was drawn to the strong color contrast, and the poster effectively blends dreamy and retro aesthetics for a bold visual impact.

The poster expressed:
REJOICE: Art and Women is an exhibition showcasing the unique works of Korean female artists in celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8th.
Everyday Practice used graphic motifs from eight exhibitions to create collage posters focused on women.
The cat as the central figure, surrounded with the floral elements, brought a sense of wonder and surrealism.
It attracts the viewer to discover the exhibition more.

Design 3:
Figure 1.3 The Scientist Coffee summer 2024 poster (By HDU 23 Lab)

Description:
The poster uses letters in a fun and creative way to look like cherry tomatoes. Instead of drawing actual shapes, it uses bold and colorful fonts to build the image. The mix of large letters and playful layout makes the poster feel lively and eye-catching.

The poster expressed:
The poster promotes a unique new flavor: a tomato-inspired beverage.
The overlapping red and orange letters evoke the juicy flesh of a tomato, while the contrasting green typography represents the leaves and stems, subtly mimicking the natural structure of the fruit.
Together, they create a fresh and tasty feeling.
The design is playful and different, which helps catch people’s attention and makes them curious to try the new flavor.

-We're also given instructions on preparing materials (magazines, old books, cutting board....) for week 2 practical, which is collage composition.

Reflection
This was the first week of the semester, and I was given clear instructions on the expectations for the course, particularly regarding the development of the e-portfolio. During the practical session, I explored various graphic design references on Pinterest, which allowed me to discover a wide range of art styles and visual approaches. This activity not only broadened my creative perspective but also emphasized the importance of conducting research before starting any design work. It helped me develop the habit of gathering inspiration and analyzing different styles as part of my creative process, which I believe will be valuable throughout the semester.
